Microtremor Survey (Passive MASW)

Principle

In this method, low amplitude ambient vibration of the ground (microtremor) caused by man-made or atmospheric disturbances is utilized as source. It is a complex vibration composed of body wave and surface wave, in which surface wave is absolutely dominant. Although the microtremor signal is very irregular in time and space domain, it still has statistical stability and can be described by stationary random processes in time and space domain. Based on the theory of stationary random process, Microtremor Survey Method extracts the surface wave (Rayleigh wave) dispersion curve from the microtremor signal, and obtains the S-wave velocity structure of underground media.
